Dowling Catholic High School is proud of its athletes and the integrity they have shown in academics and sports. In girls' swimming, Katie Broderick excels as a highly focused athlete who competes well in a variety of swim competitions.
"One athlete who has had multiple events across the board is Katie Broderick, who is having a break-out season," Frankie Hanson, coach of the girls' swim team told West Des Moines Guide. "She has been ranked in the top 5 for multiple events this year."
When asked to describe what type of athlete and individual Broderick is, Hanson was happy to share her experience since coaching the student.
"Katie is highly energetic, highly motivated, internally driven, internally competitive," Hanson said.
Broderick's stats in the various swimming competitions are as follows: 23.64 in the 50-yard freestyle, 51.79 in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:54.43 in the 200-yard freestyle, 5:09.95 in the 500-yard freestyle, 57.17 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:14.04 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 1:03.57 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Broderick is ranked 2nd in the 50-yard freestyle, 2nd in the 100-yard backstroke and 3rd in the 100-yard freestyle in addition to a number of other categories.
Though Broderick is certainly shining through in her recent performances, Hanson pointed out that the entire team deserves to be praised for their high standards of performance.
"She comes from a team that is all for one, so she is pushed and motivated by teammates and she does the same for them," Hanson said. "Katie is definitely in an environment that is of teamwork and wanting to improve, and these girls in general are driven in more aspects than just competitive swimming."
Hanson explained that the varsity GPA last year was 3.96, reflecting dedication in the pool and in the classroom.
"This is a group of highly talented, motivated and driven students, and they're a pretty awesome group to train," Hanson said. "Katie is obviously a key component of that."
