West Des Moines residents have access to some of the best city services in the state, and Mayor Steve Gaer is optimistic about making life in the city even better moving forward.
"The elected officials are very pleased to see such a high satisfaction rating as that shows that the policies being implemented are highly supported by our residents," Mayor Steve Gaer told West Des Moines Guide.
The high satisfaction ratings are based on a Citizen Survey conducted by ETC Institute, a market researcher for local governments. The results of the survey reveal that, of the 564 completed surveys, 94 percent are satisfied with the quality of life, while 90 percent are satisfied with the quality of services provided by the city.
Gaer, who has been elected mayor for four consecutive terms, said that seeing this level of satisfaction from residents gives him a great source of encouragement.
"I'm very pleased as we represent the citizens and they have entrusted us with making the appropriate decisions," Gaer said.
While a lot of factors have gone into the satisfaction of nearly 100 percent of surveyed individuals, Gaer credits much of it to not only elected officials, but also involved locals.
"The very high engagement that our citizens and elected officials have in working together to accomplish what is important for a very high quality of life is what contributed to the high score," Gaer said.
Though residents of West Des Moines are currently very pleased with life in their city, Mayor Gaer doesn't plan on being complacent moving forward.
When asked if he sees room for improvement in what West Des Moines can offer to its residents, Gaer's answer was simple: "Always."
The satisfaction ratings from West Des Moines are 41 percent above the national average for overall satisfaction of services available to residents.
