Upper Iowa University recently issued the following announcement.
The Upper Iowa men's golf team had their final tournament of the fall cut short on Tuesday due to weather conditions in Missouri. The Peacocks completed the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Missouri Western State University, but couldn't get back onto the St. Joseph Country Club course on Tuesday in St. Joseph, Mo. UIU placed 13th in the 18-team field finishing ahead of five fellow-NSIC members.
The Peacocks turned in a 300 after round one just ten strokes behind Northeastern State University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University, who tied for fourth place in the team standings. Chris Cooksley led the Peacocks with a 72 to tie for 14th place on the individual leaderboard, while Logan Schweinefus shot a 73 to tie for 25th place. Joseph Lensing and Hunter Schulte carded rounds of 77 and 78, respectively, and Jordan Hubbsrounded out the fivesome with an 88.
After the round, Head Coach Mike Lewis said, "I'm excited about the progress made this fall and our winter strength and conditioning program. Our indoor facility will be a great asset to help our student-athletes improve and be ready to tackle the spring championship season. We are looking to gear up and make a run at the NSIC title in April."
Schweinefus tied for 9th in the field in par 5 scoring averaging a 4.6 (-2) and knocked in an eagle in the round. Cooksley tied for 20th in par 3 scoring with a 3.17 (+1) average and added 13 pars in his trip around the course.
Washburn University won the team title with a first round score of 284 followed by Henderson State University and Missouri Western State, who both turned in scores of 287 to tie for second. Lucas Horseman of MWSU won medalist honors with a score of 67.
