Jeffery Roger Johnson, 50, of West Des Moines, passed away on Sunday, August 18, at his home surrounded by loving friends and family. Jeff was born on May 23, 1969, in Des Moines, IA, to Roger and Linda Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lynn (Gard) Johnson, and their three children Cooper, Brody, and Lexi.
Also surviving are his mother, Linda Johnson; two brothers, Jay (Jessi) Johnson and Joel (Kristy) Johnson; brother-in-law Lee (Mandy) Gard; four nephews, Owen, Eric, Ryan, Logan, Cole; three nieces, Gracy, Violet, and Zoe; and many cousins.
Jeff was a member of the first graduating class at Des Moines Christian High School in 1987. After high school he attended Drake University and later transferred and graduated from DePaul University in Chicago, IL.
Jeff spent most of his 30-year professional career in technology and project management consulting. During this time, he earned the respect of countless domestic and international colleagues and built a legacy based on character, integrity, hard work, and determination. In his recent retirement, he spent his days righting the wrongs of the internet while supporting his conservative beliefs and debating political viewpoints.
Jeff was an avid sportsman; spending countless hours hunting and fishing with his father, brothers, cousins, and friends. The highlights of his hunting career were trips out West with his dad to Wyoming and Colorado in pursuit of pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and elk. He loved taking the kids on hiking, hunting and fishing trips and teaching them archery and shooting. On the water one could most often find him catfishing with his lifetime best friend Matt Davis.
Jeff was a dedicated husband and loving father. Together his family went on annual cruises to warm tropical destinations, Cubs games in Chicago, and Chiefs games in Kansas City. He and Lynn loved going to concerts and traveling. He coached many youth baseball and football teams, and loved to support his kids in finding their passion whether it be sports, outdoor hobbies or the arts.
Jeff fought a courageous four-year battle against terminal ocular melanoma. During this time, he participated in multiple experimental clinical trials at the University of Iowa Hospitals. His team of Oncologists, nurses, and surgeons made tremendous advancements in the treatment of this cruel disease, and their research will benefit future patients stricken with this rare and deadly cancer. However, it was Jeff’s positive attitude, open mind, and unwavering faith in God that gave him the courage and strength needed to endure for so long.
Jeff is preceded in death by his father, Roger Johnson; grandparents, Mercille Johnson and John and Shirley Adams; and cousin, Richard Hanson.
